Guinea Fowl
belong to the pheasant family (but also share many characteristics with quail, turkeys and
domestic chickens). Their name is derived from the Guinea coast of Africa which is where
they are thought to have originated. The Greeks and Romans are known to have kept them for
the table, and throughout Europe they were prized as a rare delicacy, masquerading under
the name of Tudor Turkeys. Even though they have been domesticated since the 4th century B.C. guineas maintain many of their wild traits. This nature is what makes them good "watch birds." Unlike most geese, which squawk at everybody and everything, guineas, squawk when something is definitely wrong. Considering the European "nickname," the guineas at Weatherbury Farm are named for Tudor royalty. |
